A nature of freedom

In Norrköping, the river rushes through the city like a wild torrent. In Linköping, the banks of the Stångån River offer beautiful walking paths before it flows into Lake Roxen at the marina. Motala is located right by Sweden’s second-largest lake—the crystal-clear Vättern. It’s so close you can throw on your swimsuit and take a refreshing swim on your lunch break.
We call that freedom. Because whether you're at the office in the city, at home in a centrally located apartment, or in a countryside house—you’re always just steps away from nature. And once you’re there? Well, you have the freedom to move almost however you like. That’s Sweden’s Right of Public Access.
Hike, trail run, swim in open water, kayak, sleep under the stars, practice forest bathing, pick lingonberries, sail, or cycle straight into nature. As long as you respect landowners and wildlife, you are free to roam. It’s not just freedom—it’s something truly unique.
Nature for Everyone
In Östergötland, there’s something for everyone. If you enjoy peace and quiet, hike up Omberg and listen to the rustling of the beech trees, or take in the breathtaking views over Lake Vättern. Row out onto the lake and let your fishing float bob on the water until you catch an evening meal of perch.
Looking for more action and adventure? Visit Kolmården Wildlife Park outside Norrköping, where you can come face to face with a shark, a tiger, or even a Swedish brown bear.
Or maybe you’d rather test your endurance on one of the region’s thrilling mountain biking trails? You won’t run into a tiger, but you might spot a hare—or even a moose. And you can expect burning legs and sore muscles. Try Olstorp in Ljungsbro—a real challenge. Or head to Tinnerö in Linköping, where you’ll ride through tough yet stunning landscapes. Just don’t feel too watched—some trails take you right through pastures with curious cows keeping an eye on you.
As we said, nature in Östergötland is for everyone. It offers something for all—whenever, wherever, however you want. That’s what we call freedom.
